Kata
Kata is a series of individual techniques performed in a set sequence that
incorporates strikes, kicks, footwork and grappling techniques for
self-defense.
The importance of kata lies not only in the value of physical and mental exercise, but also in the movements themselves. Karate was originally developed for self defense and the katas are a means by which the ancient masters left their techniques for future generations.
Many martial arts systems practice kata but are only doing it as a test requirement. They are unaware of or have neglected the true meaning of kata. In Ryute Renmei kata is the nucleus within this classical martial art. Hidden within the kata are many of the self-defense techniques used by the old Okinawan masters. There are no books or manuscripts written that demonstrate the meaning of this ancient art. Therefore, the kata of Ryute Renmei is the book containing the knowledge of the Okinawan masters.
The master who developed a kata did so that his techniques would live on. It took a lifetime to develop his kata, meaning that it would often take a lifetime to create his kata. It will take another lifetime to discover all the hidden teachings within the kata and perfect their use.
