The Shin Ken Kan dojo has been operating in the Fargo Moorhead area since 1984. It was opened as the Hidden Teachings Martial Arts dojo 1984, and still operates under that named publicly. Though, as the dojo continued, it was given a personal name by Taika Seiyu Oyata, which is the Shin Ken Kan dojo; meaning the Hall (school) of Honest and Hard Training. The name given to the dojo reflects the spirit of the martial artists who train at this dojo and sincerity and commitment with which they train.

The Shin Ken Kan dojo is a school dedicated to the study, preservation and most importantly, the advancement of the art of Ryu Te® Renmei Oyata Shin Shu Ho Ryu. Ryu Te® and the family art of Oyata Shin Shu Ho Ryu are in their training and principles, the "old way" of karate. Emphasis is not on sport or competition, but rather on the development of life protection techniques, character development and training the martial artists to be an effective body technician all while adhering to the precepts and principles of the ancient bushi warriors of the Ryukyu Islands. All of which is reflected in the atmosphere of the dojo; with training equipment that would be used by ancient Ryukyu warriors such as the makiwara, chi ishi training stones and weights, as well as more modern equipment like punching and speed bags. All of these items as well as the surroundings of the dojo itself, help the martial artist gain a sense of history as well as developing their bodies physically, mentally and spiritually.

The Shin Ken Kan dojo has also hosted annual seminars with Taika Seiyu Oyata for over 20 years in the FM area. With the passing of Taika Seiyu Oyata, there was a pause in the annual seminar events for 2 years. Though as a dojo, the greatest way that we can honor Taika Oyata is to forge ahead and continue to train and learn and grow. Now the dojo is hosting annual and semiannual training seminars with many of the senior and personal students of Taika Oyata, and will continue to do so.

The Shin Ken Kan dojo is built around the principles of the teachings of Taika Seiyu Oyata and is dedicated to embodying those teachings within our dojo and ourselves. Our dojo is a school of classical, old world budo. There are not flashy banners, neon lights or high tech training gear. We are hear to provide people the opportunity to train in the warrior arts of ancient Okinawa and the Ryukyu islands and for people to become part of a something timeless and helping to preserve a truly old and unique martial art.
